Cheektowaga Police Department
Chief of Police
Chief Christine Ziemba

Chief Christine Ziemba

Welcome:

The Cheektowaga Police Department is a progressive, mid-sized law enforcement agency with a strong, publicly stated commitment to quality managed community policing. For the majority of its first 50 years of service, the police department operated primarily under the principles of the "reform strategy" of municipal policing. With crime fighting as its primary function, the majority of the work force was assigned to either random or directed patrols. There was a small complement of detectives to support the crime-fighting task. The department operated within the confines of the traditional pyramidal organizational structure. In 1990, as it was already apparent that the reformist model was reaching the end of its logical and effective life span. Random patrols and reactive police action proved to be ineffective tools to deal with the total crime problem. The Police Department needed to be the leader in taking a pro-active approach to the prevention of crime and its root causes. Recently the Town Board appointed a new Chief of Police, Christine M. Ziemba. The new Chief brought to the department the contemporary vision of community policing; a vision incorporating quality and customer focus, community involvement and problem solving. Our new Chief Ziemba was instrumental in bringing her vision of community policing to the police department and to the community. The Crime Resistance Bureau was founded in 1991 as an effective conduit of 2-way communication between the police department and the community. Presently, the entire department is involved in implementing the community policing as an enforcement strategy. Crime reduction is a key result area of our community-policing model.

Core Values

The Cheektowaga Police Department prides itself on its professionalism and dedication to duty. To remind sworn personnel of their obligation to uphold the oath taken upon hire, the Department put forth its Core Values of Honor, Integrity, Discipline, and Respect. Members were all given a copy of the values to carry with them as a constant reminder of the values they live each day as Cheektowaga Police officers. The values are as follows:

Honor holds the core values together. Honor means living up to the oath taken upon hire. It means understanding what’s right, and taking pride in the community’s acknowledgement of that reputation. Be true to your promises, and live the core values in everything you do. Honor creates a bond of trust among members of the department and shows the strength of will to live according to our values even when temptation is there to do otherwise.

Integrity is the willingness to do what’s right, even when no one is looking. A person of integrity has the moral courage to do what’s right, even if the personal cost is high. Be honest: we don’t lie; we make our word our bond. A person of integrity is responsible; acting according to the requirements of their duty, and accountable for their actions. There is no separation from professional to personal life, the standard remains the same.

Discipline is our obligation to exercise control over ourselves in all aspects of life. Avoid public displays of anger, discouragement, frustration and any action that would bring discredit. Maintain high standards physically and mentally. It takes discipline to strive for the excellence that is a hallmark of this department every day.

Respect for self, respect for others. Recognizing our authority, rely on the golden rule: treat others as we would like to be treated. Recognize that respect will not be given to us unless we show it to others and to ourselves. How we treat others reflects upon each of us, both personally and as a professional organization.
