Several different Units are part of patrol.  Here is a list of the different units and activities that patrol fullfills.  "Click" on the function of interest for further explanation:  Patrol, Accident Investigation, Foot Patrol, Bike/Segway Patrol, Honor Guard, SWAT.

The most recognizable arm of the Cheektowaga Police Department is the Patrol Division.  There are three platoons, each with offset start times so there is always adequate road coverage.  The day shift operates 7am to 3pm and 8am to 4pm, afternoons 3pm to 11pm and 4pm to 12midnight, and nights 11pm to 7am and 12 midnight to 8am.  Each patrol shift is supervised by three sergeants and a lieutenant, with the Patrol Captain in overall command of the shifts.

Patrol has a wide range of responsibilities.  Almost every call for service begins with a response from uniformed patrol officers.  They handle calls ranging from false alarms and barking dogs; to bank robberies, domestic disturbances and shootings.  In addition to responding to calls, patrol also does a great deal of self initiated and proactive work.  Special details allow officers to focus on serving warrants.  Unmarked cars are utilized to deal with known crime trends, such as larcenies from vehicles in specific areas, commercial district patrol, and surveillance of high crime areas.  Foot patrol, and bicycle and Segway patrol are used during the warm weather months to add versatility and make park patrols more efficient.  Traffic officers who work under the Accident Investigation Unit are part of the patrol division as well.

The day patrol shift has many auxiliary functions in addition to responding to calls.  This shift is responsible for staffing the Cheektowaga Town Court with bailiffs each day court is in session.  Officers rotate this duty, which includes escorting prisoners to and from their court appearances, and ensuring that no court attendees have outstanding arrest warrants.  During town tax collection times, police also staff the tax office in Town Hall to provide security for the employees.

Day shift officers also lend a hand in each high school in town.  The school liaison officers spend time each day in their assigned school and are always at the ready to handle any day to day problems or issues that crop up.   Each school has its own officer that they can call on for assistance, and other officers help out as well when needed.

All together, patrol is the largest division of the Cheektowaga Police Department, serving a variety of functions.  Uniformed officers are visible throughout town 24 hours a day and are always ready to respond to any situation.  Each officer carries our Departmental Mission and Core Values to remind them of why they serve, and to maintain their level of pride and service to the community.  We believe our officers are second to none in their dedication to duty!
