Foot Patrol

The Cheektowaga Police have, for the past fifteen years, received funding from the Office of Economic and Community Development through the Unites States Department of Housing and Urban Development, to patrol specific areas of the Town on foot. The program usually runs from June through August and provides police and citizens an opportunity to interact in a less formal way. Police generally work in two man teams, for four hour shifts; and they walk one of three districts. The districts are: Cedargrove Heights, Genesee Street near the City line, and Walden Ave west of Harlem Rd. The officers make it a point to speak to citizens and to take note of quality of life issues that face these neighborhoods. Their presence helps to increase residents’ feeling of security and reduce the fear of crime. Many streets patrolled are in areas transitioning from an older population of empty nesters to a younger group of residents, with children and a new sense of vibrancy. Frequent police contact with new and old residents alike allows for identification of any neighborhood problems and helps to bring about solutions quickly. The opportunity for casual interaction not only allows for improved relationships between police and citizens but also lets officers feel more connected to the areas they patrol on a daily basis.

In 2009, two new initiatives were introduced in addition to foot patrol’s standing mission of increasing safety and improving relations and quality of life. First, officers kept a check on vacant properties in the three districts, to ensure that properties did not fall into disrepair. Also, comment cards were created and given to officers to distribute to homeowners and residents. These provided yet another way for citizens to give feedback to the department; they could comment on officers they met and bring up any issues that needed addressing in their area. These additions led to many positive results and were met with approval across the board. As Foot Patrol moves into a new decade the Cheektowaga Police Department will continue to seek out new ways to serve and protect its community.
