Disabled Parking Permits

Parking permits can be obtained in the Town Clerk's Office -
Monday thru Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

• Parking permits may only be obtained from the locality in which you reside.
• A Disabled Parking Permits form can be printed from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles web site at DMV Forms

may be obtained from the Town Clerk's Office and must be signed by the disabled individual's physician.

• The physician must fill in the name, address, professional license number AND the disability of the patient before permit is issued.
• The Disabilities Form is then submitted to the Town Clerk's Office for approval.
• Parking permits MUST be hung from the rear-view mirror when parked, but should be REMOVED from the mirror when DRIVING.
• You are responsible for renewing your parking permit. Expired permits are not valid, and cannot be used to park. To renew your permit, bring the expired permit to the Town Clerk's Office on or before the date of expiration. Permanent permits are valid for three years and renewals will be issued upon receiving the expired permit. The temporary permit must be turned in when expired.
• If your temporary parking permit is expiring and you are still disabled, you must provide a new physician's statement to receive another temporary permit.
• Lost or stolen permits should be immediately reported to the locality that issued the permit. A duplicate permit wil be issued ONCE and an affidavit stating that the permit was lost or stolen must be filed with the Town Clerk. A $2.00 processing fee to replace permits will be charged for worn out, lost or stolen permits.
• Section 1203-a(1) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law gives issuing agents the authority to revoke a parking permit, if used by anyone other than the person it was issued to, or misused in any way by the person or facility it was issued to. Duplicating or altering the permit makes it void. Parking permits are not transferable, and can be revoked if used by any other person.
• The permits never allow you to park illegally. People using permits and plates must comply with local parking regulations.
• Most other states, territories and foreign countries honor New York's permits, but if you are traveling outside New York State, check with the police or Motor Vehicles agency of the other state to be sure.
• Do not allow anyone to use your parking permit. Persons that are not disabled and are found illegally parked in reserved spaces violate Section 1203-c(4) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law and can be fined.
• The permit allows disabled individuals to park anywhere in New York State in areas or spaces reserved for people with disabilities, ONLY IF THE PERSON TO WHOM THEY WERE ISSUED IS TRAVELING IN THE VEHICLE. Although permits allow access to reserved spaces in all parks of New York State, they never allow you to disobey state or local parking regulations.
• Making false statements or providing misinformation on an application submitted to the Town Clerk's Office is a violation of NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1203-a(4).
• The original form with the doctor's signature must be filed with the Town Clerk's Office for approval.
