The Cheektowaga Police Department is a progressive, mid-sized law enforcement agency with a strong, publicly stated
commitment to quality managed community policing. For the majority of its first 50 years of service, the police department operated primarily under the principles of the "reform strategy" of
municipal policing. With crime fighting as its primary function, the majority of the work force was assigned to either random or directed patrols. There was a small complement of detectives to
support the crime-fighting task. The department operated within the confines of the traditional pyramidal organizational structure. In 1990, as it was already apparent that the reformist model was
reaching the end of its logical and effective life span. Random patrols and reactive police action proved to be ineffective tools to deal with the total crime problem. The Police Department needed
to be the leader in taking a pro-active approach to the prevention of crime and its root causes. Recently the Town Board appointed a new Chief of Police, Christine M. Ziemba. The new Chief brought
to the department the contemporary vision of community policing; a vision incorporating quality and customer focus, community involvement and problem solving. Our new Chief Ziemba was
instrumental in bringing her vision of community policing to the police department and to the community. The Crime Resistance Bureau was founded in 1991 as an effective conduit of 2-way
communication between the police department and the community. Presently, the entire department is involved in implementing the community policing as an enforcement strategy. Crime reduction is a
key result area of our community-policing model. |
