Crime Resistance Unit
The Crime Resistance Unit was formed in 1991. The major
function of the Unit is public education in the various
areas of crime prevention. The officer assigned to the
Unit previews videos and designs educational pamphlets
and outlines to be used in these efforts. Programs are
conducted at all age levels and to all groups. Topics
include: Stranger Danger, 9-1-1, Rape prevention,
Shoplifting, Senior Crime Prevention, DWI Awareness,
Baby-sitting Safety and many others. Other popular
programs offered are: The Citizens’ Police Academy,
Graduate Citizens’ Police Academy, Youth Citizens’
Police Academy, the Watch Your Car Program and
Neighborhood Watch.
A large number of educational programs are conducted at the
area schools, ranging from Pre-K and Early Child Care
Centers to high schools and colleges. The Parent/Teacher
Organizations are also contacted, often in regards to
drug awareness. Child safety programs are also conducted
through various Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, along
with summer programs run by the Youth and Recreational
Department. Two major educational programs offered are
D.A.R.E. and I-Safe (Internet Safety Program).
Officers assist at many bicycle safety rodeos, conduct
child fingerprinting in conjunction with business
programs, and are present at fire hall and school open
houses to man displays and answer questions.
The
Unit runs an active recruiting program promoting the
Police Department as a rewarding choice for a career.
This is done through participation in college career
days and various local job fairs. C.R.U. officers man
displays, send out direct mailings, post announcements,
and advertise via local media outlets.
The
Crime Resistance Unit is home to "McGruff, the Crime
Dog," the nationwide crime prevention mascot. McGruff
appearances are scheduled by the unit, which maintains
the costume, and provides the accompanying videos and
brochures.
A very
popular service the department offers are K-9
demonstrations with Officer John Doskocz and his K-9
dog, Iozo.
