Patrol Division Patrol is the backbone of the police organization whether as first responders to calls for service,
conducting preliminary investigations, enforcing traffic laws or engaging in self-initiated activity. The police department uses foot patrol, one- and two-officer cars, undercover cars, motorcycles and
bicycles to patrol the Town of Cheektowaga.
The patrol division operates on the community-policing
model in which input from the community is vital to
determining policing strategies. Officers attend
community meetings to interact with the residents and
address their concerns regarding law enforcement. The
patrol division provides the initial response to calls
for service from the public. Patrol officers are responsible for the prevention of crime, enforcement of all laws, the arrest and prosecution of criminals and the protection of life and property.
The patrol division is divided into three platoons.
The first platoon consists of:
11 p.m. – 7 a.m. and
Midnight to 8 p.m. shifts
The second platoon consists of:
7 a.m. – 3 p.m. and
8 a.m. and 4 p.m. shifts
The third platoon consists of:
3 p.m. – 11 p.m. and
4 p.m. – Midnight shifts
Officers patrol five districts in town:
Harlem | Midtown | Airport | William | French
The patrol division has received a grant through
Cheektowaga's Community Development Office for
several years to conduct foot patrols in certain
areas of town including Cedargrove Heights, Walden
Avenue and Genesee Street. Bicycle patrol officers conducted a two-year grant from the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee to increase helmet usage, enforce the Vehicle and Traffic
Laws as they pertain to bicyclists and distribute free bicycle helmets to youths in the community. The patrol division is also responsible for traffic and crowd control at all the major parades and events
in the Town, which include little league parades, the War of 1812 parade, Fourth of July festivities at Town Park, Pulaski Day festivities and the Memorial and Labor Day parades.
In addition to daily patrol functions, the second platoon officers also function as court bailiffs and tax office security.
Town parks are heavily patrolled by the bicycle patrol officers and by district officers to reduce the problems
officers normally encounter each summer season. The goal is to reduce the problems of
disorderly youths, criminal mischief, fights and bike thefts to make our parks safe for family activities throughout the summer.
During the busy holiday shopping season, unmarked
police vehicles are assigned to patrol businesses and
shopping center parking lots to reduce thefts, robberies and stolen motor vehicles.
