In cooperation with the Erie County Department of Senior Services, the Town operates five VANS to pick up Senior Citizens (who cannot use any conventional means of transportation) at their home and take them to the doctor, food shopping and other necessary services.

The suggested donation for a one-way trip is $2.00 but each person determines what he or she can pay.  The van runs six days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Please try to make your appointments early in the day, allowing plenty of time for your return home.  One wheelchair van is available and the suggested donation is $5 for a one-way trip.  Residents must specify that they need the wheelchair van service.

Van reservations for MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS can be made a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of two weeks in advance (the sooner the better).  All OTHER APPOINTMENTS (shopping, banking, etc.) can be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance and a maximum of one week in advance.  Appointments will be scheduled on a space availability basis - medical being the priority.  CALL 858-RIDE (858-7433) BETWEEN 8:30 AM AND 4:20 PM TO MAKE YOUR VAN RESERVATION.

Operation of the MEALS ON WHEELS program in cooperation with the Buffalo and Erie County Meals on Wheels are presently serving 324 elderly homebound persons daily - Monday through Friday.  One hot and one cold meal are delivered at noon by volunteers.  Mileage to the driver is reimbursed by Erie County.  The site manager is paid by Buffalo Meals on Wheels.  The Town of Cheektowaga recruits volunteers.  The suggested donation is $23.00 per week.

We are on 24 HOUR CALL with the CHEEKTOWAGA POLICE DEPARTMENT for any emergency that arises with our elderly residents.

A full program of OUTREACH SERVICES is available including assistance in filing for medicare and medicaid, food stamps, heat assistance, income tax preparation, housing, nursing home placement, aid in setting up home maker services, visiting nurses and other health related services and referral to the proper agency when needed.

A full schedule of RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES is provided at the Senior Center since its construction in 1982.  This schedule is printed monthly at no cost to the Town.  Over 45,000 elders registered in our daily log in the past year.

FORTY SENIOR CITIZEN GROUPS are based throughout the Town in churches, schools and libraries to serve the local neighborhoods.  Assistance is offered to all groups to implement their programming.  Each group receives a subsidy for programming from the Town of Cheektowaga.  A meeting of the group leaders is scheduled every two months to disseminate information to the group members, to exchange ideas and to conduct seminars on various topics.

TELEPHONE ASSURANCE PROGRAM (TAP) - Volunteers reach out to Seniors who live alone to brighten their day by placing a friendly call.  Contact Darlene at 686-3930 if you wish to enroll in this program.  Volunteers area always welcome to make calls.
